Science projects have always been a huge success when they involve anything that has to do with volcanoes.  The reason?  Quite simply put, they are fascinating, and they are remarkably easy to create.  Erupting volcano science projects are very common, but they can be fixed up to be extra unique.  Here is how to build a homemade erupting volcano science project that will draw rave reviews from your teacher:

The first thing you should do is make sure your homemade erupting volcano science project is put together in a way that it can be mobile.  It is hard to build a good science project if you have to put the entire thing together at the science fair itself.  A homemade erupting volcano science project is very easy to make portable as none of the ingredients are especially heavy.  As such, you can build them to be moved around easily.

Build a box about two square feet around.  Make sure that you put a lip around the box all the way around to keep everything in place.  Once you have built the small box, then lay a liner of plastic down as well.  Then you are ready to fill about a inch of sand into the box.  This sand should be packed fairly tightly.

Now you are ready to build the erupting volcano.  Add a good bit of sand to the center of the box, and mold a volcano out of the sand.  Use water to help the sand work better.  Build the volcano up about a foot out of the box.  Make the erupting volcano science project more thick than tall so that it will hold it’s form.  Once you have the volcano built, then take a plastic cup and place it within the top of the volcano.  You want to bury the cup in the volcano so that it does not readily show to the science fair judges.

Next, dig some lines through the homemade erupting volcano so that it will look authentic. You should think about the Colorado mountains to come up with ideas.  Lines throughout the sand will give the lava areas to overflow to, so be liberal with them.  Next, you will add three or four drops of red or orange food coloring, and some baking soda.  Your homemade erupting science project is ready for explosion.

Once this is in place, add in some toy people, cars, roads, trees, bushes, snakes, animals and anything else that can make your homemade erupting volcano science project more authentic.  This is a fairly easy way to give your project a unique look.

When you are ready for the explosion, simply add in some vinegar.  The volcano will bubble, gurgle, and ultimately shoot red lava down the sides of the volcano and into the valley below!
